Desha County Sheriff Resigns Following Roadside Incident and Public Pressure

ARKANSAS CITY, Ark. — Desha County Sheriff Mitch Grant has resigned from office following a roadside medical event and months of mounting public pressure over past personal controversies.

Grant's departure occurred just over two months after he secured the Democratic primary nomination. Because he faced no Republican challengers in the upcoming November general election, he was virtually unopposed for a second full term. The sudden vacancy has forced local officials to quickly address both law enforcement leadership and upcoming ballot logistics.

The events leading to his resignation culminated in early May 2026, when department personnel found Sheriff Grant unresponsive inside his county vehicle on a rural roadway. Desha County Judge Wayne Smith later confirmed the incident, noting Grant reported only remembering leaving his mother's house before waking up in a local hospital room. While county administration did not release specific medical details regarding the event, the incident became a turning point for county leadership.

On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Grant officially submitted his immediate resignation, citing personal reasons. Because Grant won the March primary, his abrupt exit leaves a vacancy on the November general election ballot. To maintain department operations, the Desha County Quorum Court scheduled an emergency session to formally appoint an interim sheriff.

The roadside incident followed a series of public controversies involving the sheriff over the preceding months. Public scrutiny initially intensified in February 2026, when a Dumas resident posted screenshots and photos on social media detailing an inappropriate personal relationship with Grant. Grant subsequently issued a public apology, acknowledging the embarrassment caused to his family, and briefly stepped back from his daily command duties.

Additionally, local records indicate Grant had previously been the subject of a citizen complaint filed with the Arkansas Ethics Commission regarding allegations of sexual harassment spanning from 2023 to 2025. Although the Ethics Commission ultimately dismissed those specific charges, the combination of the social media disclosures and the May medical event created sustained scrutiny around his administration.

The resignation has prompted discussions regarding the upcoming election cycle. Because Grant was unopposed on the general ballot, the Desha County Democratic Committee holds the legal authority to select a replacement candidate to place on the ticket. If a candidate is not named, the interim sheriff appointed by the Quorum Court will serve out the remainder of the term.

Regional prosecutors and the Arkansas State Police have stated there are currently no active criminal investigations into the matter. The Quorum Court's upcoming appointment will determine the immediate leadership of Southeast Arkansas law enforcement as the county transitions toward the general election.
